SFH to go on four-nation tour
The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, will visit Canada, Chile
and Brazil and attend the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland,
between May 2 and 16.
At his first stop in Toronto, Canada, Dr Chow will call on senior officials
of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs as well as representatives of local
medical professionals.
During his stay in Toronto, Dr Chow will visit various medical facilities
and organisations including the Hospital for Sick Children, the Mount Sinai
Hospital and Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute, the Krembil Neuroscience
Centre as well as the Regent Park Community Health Centre.
He will also tour the Canada Health Infoway, an independent not-for-profit
corporation to foster and accelerate the development and adoption of
electronic health record systems, and the Guelph Food Technology Centre
which is an accredited organisation to deliver food safety audits and
certification services.
From Toronto, Dr Chow will travel to Santiago, Chile, on May 5. He will
study the fishery and agricultural development in Chile by meeting officials
of the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Marine Fisheries Service and
the Agricultural and Livestock Service. He will also visit a salmon
technology institute, some salmon farms and fruit processing facilities.
Dr Chow will be in Brazil on May 8 and start his programme there by visiting
the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation. In addition to meetings at
the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply and the
Brazilian Meat Exporters Association, he will also visit cattle and poultry
farms to see the latest developments of the poultry industry in the country.
After Brazil, Dr Chow will head for Geneva, the last leg of his visit. He
will meet the Minister of Health, Dr Chen Zhu, and the Director-General of
the World Health Organisation, Dr Margaret Chan, before attending the World
Health Assembly on May 16.
He will return to Hong Kong on May 17.
