Mainland live chicken imports increased
The supply of Mainland live chicken imports would be increased from Sunday
(August 3), from 8,000 chickens a day to 16,000 chickens a day to ensure a
steady supply of live chickens in the market, a spokesman for the Food and
Health Bureau said today (August 1). Supply of Mainland day-old-chicks to Hong
Kong will also be resumed on Sunday.
The spokesman said: "These arrangements have taken into account the testing
capability of the departments concerned and balanced the risks of avian
influenza.
"With the increase of Mainland live chicken imports and resumption of
day-old-chicks, the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and the
Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department will closely monitor the
situation in live poultry wholesale market, retail markets and farms to protect
public health," the spokesman said.
