Professor Sophia Chan visited London on May 17 and 18 to learn more about the latest developments in genomics and mental health services. She met with the Deputy Speaker (Lords) of the UK Parliament, Baroness Finlay of Llandaff on May 17 (London time) to discuss matters relating to mental health, organ donation, tobacco control and palliative care. Baroness Finlay is a Welsh doctor and an expert in palliative medicine. Professor Sophia Chan went to Rethink Mental Illness on May 17 (London time). Rethink Mental Illness is a charity focused on mental health, which has been promoting its destigmatisation under the large-scale "Time to Change" programme in recent years. She was briefed on the UK's experience in promoting mental health, which is valuable to Hong Kong in taking forward its own ongoing mental health education and destigmatisation campaign. Professor Sophia Chan visited Genomics England on May 18 (London time) to learn more about the latest developments in genomics. Genomics England, a company wholly owned by the UK Department of Health and Social Care, was set up to deliver the 100,000 Genomes Project. The project will sequence 100,000 whole genomes from selected patients and their families for analysis, with an aim to benefit patients, enable scientific discovery and enhance development of genomic medicine.
