Chinese Medicine Clinical Services

Specialised CM Services (中醫分科服務)

Currently, there is no specialty system for Chinese medicine (CM) practitioners under the legal regimes in Hong Kong. To manage and categorise the expected high attendance of The Chinese Medicine Hospital of Hong Kong (CMHHK) and to strategically train up the CM professionals and students, the CM services in the CMHHK, including inpatient, day-patient and outpatient services, will be delivered on the basis of specialised services. CM practitioners of the outpatient clinics of the CMHHK, the Chinese Medicine Clinic cum Training and Research Centres in 18 districts and all other private clinics can refer patients to receive specialised CM services in the CMHHK. Notwithstanding, the clinical privileges of CM practitioners in the CMHHK will not be limited by specialisation. Under the fundamental belief of holism (整體觀), CM practitioner will consider the state of human body as a whole in the course of consultation, instead of focusing on single symptom, disease or organ.

Specialised CM Services to be provided in the CMHHK include:

(1) Internal Medicine in CM (中醫內科): the foundation and confluence of holistic diagnosis and treatment in CM as well as the foundation of all other clinical subjects in CM.
(2) External Medicine in CM (中醫外科): the diagnosis and treatment of diseases which can be observed externally from the body surface, such as sores, breast diseases, ridges, tumors, rocks, anorectal diseases, male anterior genital disease, skin diseases and sexually transmitted diseases, traumatic diseases and surrounding vascular disease. CM external treatment (中醫外治法) such as fumigation and bathe, and change of dressing, is one of the typical treatment methods of this service.
(3) Gynecology in CM (中醫婦科): the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to menstruation, leucorrhoea, pregnancy, childbirth and breast feeding. The emphasis of this service is the traditional CM theory regarding the observation on the physio-pathological characteristics of women.
(4) Paediatrics in CM (中醫兒科): the diagnosis and treatment in dealing with growth, nutrition and general diseases of infants, children and adolescents. The emphasis of this service is the observation of the physio-pathological characteristics of infants, children and adolescents in different stages of child development under traditional CM theories.
