Press Releases
SFH on manpower in public hospitals
Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Secretary
for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, after attending a
public function today (October 10):
Reporter: Do you see a risk of medical staff in public
hospitals being plunged away by the Gleneagles Hospital?
What can public hospitals do to retain their staff?
Secretary for Food and Health: We are of course concerned
about the fact that Gleneagles Hospital is going to employ
medical, nursing as well as supporting staff from the
existing hospitals, especially public hospitals. In this
regard, the Hospital Authority (HA) has been in very close
contact with the management of the Gleneagles Hospital so
that their recruitment exercise could be dovetailed with the
retention policy of the HA to ease out the transfer. I know
that the HA has already adopted several measures, namely to
employ the retired supporting staff, to improve training and
development opportunities as well as to enhance the
promotion prospect, to retain manpower.
Reporter: Dr Ko, so you are talking about the promotion
system in public hospitals. What do you think because there
is a lack of manpower and definitely the promotion is
already quite good …
Secretary for Food and Health: The HA chairman Professor
John Leong has recently explained that they had adopted
several measures to enhance the promotion prospect of
supporting staff. We are confident that these measures would
be able to retain the necessary staff.
