The Government gazetted today (December 8) the re-appointment of the Chairman and the appointment of three new members to the Social Welfare Advisory Committee for a period of two years.  Also, five incumbent members have been re-appointed to the Committee.  The re-appointment and appointments took effect on December 1, 2000.

Mr Peter Wong Hong-yuen has extensive experience in community service and has been actively involved in the development of social welfare issues during his term as Chairman of the Committee over the past four years.

The three new members are Miss Dorothy Lau Wai-ling, the Director of Sheng Kung Hui Diocesan Welfare Council; Mrs Cheung Ang Siew Mei, the Executive Director of Christian Action; and Mr Keith Lam Hon-keung, the Chairman of Lai Bick Construction and Investment Co. Ltd.

The five incumbent members who have been re-appointed are -

- Dr Philemon Choi Yuen-wan and Mr Ng Shui-lai, for a period of one year;

- Dr Ng Yau-yung, Miss Wan Lai-yau, Deborah and Mr Stephen Yau How-boa, for a period of two years.

They have all participated actively in the work of the Committee during their terms of office.

The Secretary for Health and Welfare, Dr E K Yeoh, thanked all members for their valuable support and contribution over the years.  He also welcomed the appointment of the three new members to the Committee and looked forward to the contribution of the Committee to the development of welfare services in Hong Kong.

The functions of the Committee remain to keep social welfare services under continuous review and to advise the Government on all policy issues relating to welfare development.
