$5 million donation for people with disabilities

A total sum of $5 million for 37 projects has been granted under the S.K. Yee Fund for the Disabled. These projects aim to bring improvement to the mental or physical health and well-being of people with disabilities.

Major grants include $950,000 for the establishment of a health massage and treatment centre operated by blind masseurs; $600,000 to the Labour Department for a trial employment placement scheme for disabled job-seekers; $450,000 for provision of equipment and computers to self-help organizations; and some $800,000 for air-conditioning of hostels and service centres.

This is the third donation since the establishment of the Fund in 1998 which provides financial assistance to poor people with disabilities. A total sum of about $15 million was granted since the inception of the Fund.

Secretary for Health and Welfare, Dr. E.K. Yeoh, praised the trustees of the S.K. Yee Medical Foundation for their generous donation in the past and their pledged support to the continuation of the Fund in future years.

All grants are made on the recommendations of an assessment panel comprising the Commissioner for Rehabilitation and representatives from the Social Welfare and Education Departments.
