The Government announced today (31 March ) the re-appointment of Mr Peter Woo Kwong-ching as the Chairman of the Hospital Authority (the Authority) for six months with effect from 1 April 2000, and the appointment of two new members to the Authority.

"Under Mr Woo's capable chairmanship, the Authority will continue to provide quality public hospital services to the community and prepare itself for the challenges ahead," the Secretary for Health and Welfare, Dr E K Yeoh, said.

Mr Woo was first appointed as Chairman in 1995. During his chairmanship, Mr Woo has steered the Authority through various management and operational reforms, enabling the Authority to better deliver its mission through the provision of a caring, competent, efficient and accountable health care service.

Messrs Cheng Yiu-tong and Vincent Fang Kang are appointed as members of the Authority for two years with effect from 1 April 2000. Mr Cheng is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Union, and has extensive public service experience. Mr Fang, a businessman, has served as a member of the Hospital Governing Committee of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital since June 1996.

Having served the Authority for three years, Mr Frank Pong Fai will step down from the Authority on 1 April 2000 due to his other heavy commitments. Dr Yeoh thanked Mr Pong for his unfailing support and invaluable service to the Authority in the past years.

The newly constituted Hospital Authority as at 1 April 2000 comprises 25 members, namely the Chairman, three public officers, one principal officer from the Hospital Authority, and 20 non-official members. A full membership list is as follows :
