SFH saddened by death of Professor Sir David Todd
The Secretary for Food and Health, Professor Sophia Chan, today (August 17) expressed sadness at the passing of Emeritus Professor of the University of Hong Kong (HKU), Sir David Todd, and extended deep condolences to his family.
Sir David devoted his entire life to medical education and development in Hong Kong. The contribution he made was tremendous. As Sir David's former colleague in HKU, I have benefited enormously from the experience and is greatly saddened by his departure. David was caring and gave his best to help people around him. He has nurtured and earned the respect of numerous doctors in Hong Kong. The foundation of our local medical specialist training owes much to his effort. His insight was also instrumental to the development of medical research which provided a solid basis for the formulation of healthcare policy," Professor Chan said.
Sir David was the head of the Department of Medicine of HKU from 1974 to 1989, the founding president of the Hong Kong College of Physicians in 1986 and a member of the first Hospital Authority Board in 1990. He remained as an Emeritus Professor of HKU following his retirement in 1994. Sir David also served as the Founding President of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine from 1992 to 1996. During his presidency, he promoted localisation of medical professionals and specialisation of medicine. He also encouraged scientific research and the development of specialist qualifications.
Professor Chan said, "Sir David relentlessly served our society. His death is a great loss to the medical and education sector. I believe that Sir David's students will embrace and pass on his dedication and devotion, and contribute to our society with their talents. His vision and spirit will be commemorated."
