Secretary for Food and Health: I am aware of the views from our medical
colleagues regarding the proposed reform of the Medical Council. I would
like to stress that the Medical Council is a very important mechanism
whereby the profession, the Government and the public work together in
collaborative spirit to safeguard the health of Hong Kong people through
ensuring the professional standard and conduct of our medical doctors. The
Medical Council is not a forum for the Government to work against the
profession. Instead, the Government upholds the very important spirit of
professional autonomy.
