Press Releases
SFH on MERS, regulation of beauty industry and smuggling of frozen meat
Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Secretary for Food and
Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, after attending a meeting of the Legislative Council
today (June 24):
Reporter: (About the status of MERS in South Korea.)
Secretary for Food and Health: We are very concerned about the situation of
Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in Korea. In recent few days, the
Republic of Korea has reported fewer confirmed cases of MERS. We will
continue to monitor the situation until there is no confirmed MERS cases
reported. Then we can count from that day onwards for two cycles of
incubation period before we can remove the (Outbound Travel) Alert.
Reporter: (About regulation of the beauty industry.)
Secretary for Food and Health: We have made proposal to regulate the
provision of high-risk medical procedures. Premises where these procedures
would be conducted as well as equipment involved will be subject to
regulation after the necessary legislative process has been completed.
Reporter: (About the smuggling of frozen meat to Hong Kong.)
Secretary for Food and Health: I think the relevant regulatory authorities
in Hong Kong will base on risk assessment and intelligence received to carry
out very stringent inspection and law enforcement actions to curb the
smuggling of these products to Hong Kong.
