SFH on tobacco control
Following is the transcript of remarks (English portion) made by the
Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, after attending the 30th
Anniversary of Tobacco Control cocktail reception this afternoon (October
9):
Report: (On tobacco control)
Secretary for Food and Health: This year marks the 30th anniversary of the
commencement of tobacco control initiative in Hong Kong. Throughout these
thirty years, with the collaboration between the Government, committees on
smoking and health, our NGOs, healthcare workers, as well as universities,
we have done a lot of work, including public education, legislative control
of smoking in terms of forbidding any advertisement on tobacco products, as
well as in recent years the total control of indoor smoking activity. All of
these initiatives have helped Hong Kong achieve a very low smoking rate
among our population, which is about 11.1 percent. The rate is among the
lowest in the world. But as the Chief Executive has the pledge, we will
continue our initiative to drive all other measures to ensure that Hong Kong
will become a smoke-free society.
