Press Releases
SFH on organ donation
Following is the transcript of remarks made by the Secretary for Food and
Health, Dr York Chow, at a stand-up media session after attending the
ceremony marking the second anniversary of the establishment of the
Centralised Organ Donation Register today (November 21):
Reporter: (About changing people's perception about organ donation)
Secretary for Food and Health: We hope that with what Simon Hui has done, he
has inspired the public about the importance of organ donation. So far the
number of people interested in donation and the actual number of donation
has increased since that incident. I don't have the exact number right now
but I am sure this type of trend will go on for some time. In addition, we
still need to have much stronger publicity in terms of letting people know
about what is the importance of donation and who is actually eligible to
receive donation. I think the public should also realise that if they
donate, they can actually extend somebody's life indefinitely and able to
help them and give the family another hope. I think this is very important.
We hope that this type of culture can continue and we also hope that with
our publicity there are more people registering on the Centralised Organ
Donation Register.
Reporter: (About condition of Customs Officer, Mr Yuen Wai-cheung)
Secretary for Food and Health: His condition is stable as I've explained
earlier in Chinese. His kidney's function has returned almost to normal. We
were worried at some time, at some stage that he might actually need to have
continuous dialysis.
