SFH visits Sandy Ridge Cemetery (with photos)
The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, visited Sandy Ridge
Cemetery in North District this afternoon (August 5) to better understand
the area that will be used for the development of columbarium facilities.
The undeveloped area within Sandy Ridge Cemetery is one of the 12 identified
sites with potential for columbarium development as listed in the public
consultation document on the review of columbarium policy.
According to the draft Development Permission Area Plans published by the
Town Planning Board for the closed area in the northernmost part of the New
Territories on July 30, Sandy Ridge Cemetery, with an area of 92.08
hectares, is zoned "Other Specified Uses" annotated "Cemetery" to designate
land for cemeteries, graves and funeral facilities.
Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for Food and Health (Food), Mrs
Marion Lai, the Deputy Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene
(Administration and Development), Ms Julina Chan, and the Assistant Director
of Food and Environmental Hygiene (Operations), Ms Rhonda Lo, Dr Chow took
the opportunity to have examine the suitability and explore the feasibility
of building columbarium facilities in the cemetery so as to meet public
demand.
The Food and Health Bureau launched a three-month public consultation to
solicit views on a package of short, medium and long-term proposals relating
to columbarium policy on July 6. One of the key issues on which public views
are being sought is how to increase the supply of columbarium facilities.
