The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, today (July 6) visited Wan Chai to familiarise himself with the latest developments in the district.

Accompanied by Wan Chai District Officer, Miss Angela Luk, Dr Chow first visited True Light Middle School of Hong Kong to see life in the school and its learning environment, and to exchange views with teachers and students on healthcare and other current issues. Dr Chow also attended a demonstration by students of their Passing-of-the-Light ceremony and marching performance. During this traditional school ceremony, form five graduates will pass the "Light of Truth" on to form four students, symbolising the succession of the school spirit from generation to generation.

Dr Chow then visited the Community Health Call Centre Telephone Nursing Consultation Service (TNCS) in Tang Shiu Kin Hospital. Launched by the Hong Kong East Cluster in 2003, the telephone consultation and support service aims to provide support for high-risk discharged elderly patients. Under the pilot scheme, nurses will co-ordinate with hospitals and community healthcare and service units, and closely monitor the health condition of the elders by telephone. The nurses will also assess the health condition of the elders, conduct triage assessment, and provide referral and health advice according to clinical protocols.

Dr Chow said he was pleased to learn that since it started service, the TNCS has served more than 15,000 patients, and among these patients, the utility rate of emergency medical care service and the death rate have been reduced significantly. Noting that the staff of the centre had been awarded for being one of this year's outstanding staff and teams of the Hospital Authority, Dr Chow commended the team for their professionalism and hard work in providing quality services to patients.

Dr Chow concluded his visit at a tea gathering with district councillors, with whom he exchanged views and experiences on how to improve services in health, food safety and environmental hygiene.
