Government well aware of live poultry trade's concerns
A spokesman for the Food and Health Bureau today (June 21) said the Government
was well aware of the concerns of the live poultry trade, adding that it would
continue to exchange views with the trade over the two proposals of compensation
for closing business and daily clearance of live chickens.
"In the face of the prevailing threat of avian influenza, the public are
expecting the Government to take effective measures to safeguard public health.
"The two proposals put forward by the Government were meant to reduce the risk
of Hong Kong from being attacked by the disease,” the spokesman said.
He added that the trade’s demands for the Government to shelve the proposals and
resume live chicken trading on July 2 were not in line with Hong Kong people’s
expectation of enhancing public health.
"We hope the trade could stay calm and study the Government’s proposals in a
sensible and pragmatic way in a hope of reaching an early consensus," the
spokesman added.
