Estimated live pig supply
According to the information provided by the Special Commissioner's Office in
Guangzhou, Ministry of Commerce, the estimated number of live pigs to be
imported from the Mainland for tomorrow (January 22) is 3300, a spokesman for
the Food and Health Bureau said today (January 21).
It is understood that there is a stock of some 760 live pigs in Sheung Shui
Slaughter House. Together with the supply of some 100 live pigs from local farms
tomorrow, the total number of live pigs available for auction tomorrow will be
about 4160.
Furthermore, there are still around 1000 pigs at the slaughter house which have
been auctioned but not yet slaughtered. The total amount of pigs available for
the market tomorrow will thus be 5160.
The spokesman said announcing the estimated live pig supply for the following
day could enhance information flow and transparency of the market. Members of
the public and traders could better understand the overall supply of live pigs.
The actual live pig supply today (January 21) is 3609, with 3500 imported from
the Mainland and 109 from local farms. The wholesale price for live pigs ranges
from $1170 to $1450 per 100 catties.
