Food and Health Bureau responds to Mainland live pig supply
In response to media enquiries on the recent supply of Mainland live pigs, a
spokesman for the Food and Health Bureau said today (July 5) that the supply of
Mainland live pigs to Hong Kong yesterday (July 4) was about 4,000 pigs. Taking
into account of the local live pig supply, the overall supply of live pigs in
Hong Kong amounted to 4,770 pigs. The average wholesale price per kilogramme
ranged from $16.8 to $17.4.
As at 4 pm today, the number of Mainland live pigs supplied to Hong Kong was
3,500 while the number of local live pigs was 750.
The Food and Health Bureau had met with the importer to learn more about the
recent shortage of live pig supply from the Mainland and express the
Government's concerns. It was understood that the decrease in the number of live
pigs supplied to Hong Kong was due to the tight supply of live pigs on the
Mainland.
The importer was doing its best to liaise with Mainland suppliers to stabilise
the supply. The Government would continue to pay attention to the latest
development.
The spokesman also noted that before the supply of live pigs stabilised, the
Government would release daily the figures of pig import on the day before so
that the media and the public could grasp the accurate information.
