SHWF to visit Beijing to enhance co-operation on food safety

        The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, will leave on Thursday morning (December 9) for a two-day visit to Beijing to enhance co-operation with the Mainland on food safety issues.

        On the first day of his visit, Dr Chow will meet Ministry of Agriculture officials to discuss co-operation and liaison mechanism. He will also hold meetings with officials of the State General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine on Mainland food for export to Hong Kong as well as inspection and quarantine matters related to food animals.

        Dr Chow will call on the Ministry of Commerce the following day to discuss food issues as well as exported food animal and poultry issues. In the afternoon he will meet officials of the Ministry of Civil Affairs on welfare services issues.

        Dr Chow will be accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Mrs Carrie Yau; the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Gregory Leung; the Director of Health, Dr Lam Ping-yan; the Deputy Director of Social Welfare, Mrs Agnes Allcock; and the Deputy Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation, Mr Lau Sin-pang.

        Dr Chow will return to Hong Kong on Friday night (December 10).
