New Hospital Authority Chairman appointed

        The Government announced today (October 12) the appointment of Mr Anthony Wu Ting-yuk as the Chairman of the Hospital Authority (HA).

        Mr Wu is an accountant by profession. First appointed as a member of the HA in 1999, he has been serving as the chairman of authority's Finance Committee and Main Tender Board since October, 2000. He played a significant role in enhancing the authority's financial and administrative control processes as well as its internal and external audit functions. Mr Wu was a member of the Hospital Governing Committee of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital between 1997 and 2001.

        The Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food, Dr York Chow, welcomed Mr Wu's appointment as the new chairman, saying Mr Wu's expertise in the accountancy and business fields, vast experience in public service and thorough understanding of the HA's operation made him eminently suitable for such an important post.

        "I have every confidence in Mr Wu that under his leadership, the HA will be able to rise to the many challenges that lie ahead and continue to provide the public with quality medical services," Dr Chow said.

        Dr Chow also commended the outgoing chairman, Dr Leong Che-hung, for the strong leadership and unwavering commitment he had demonstrated over the past two years, especially during the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak in battling the previously unknown disease and after the outbreak in strengthening the public hospital system against future threats of infectious diseases.

        Mr Wu is appointed for a term of two years. His appointment is made pursuant to the Hospital Authority Ordinance. The authority currently comprises a chairman, 17 non-official members, three public officers, and one principal officer from the HA.
