CYCRC to be removed from list of designated places of refuge

< Back

The Chuk Yuen Children's Reception Centre (CYCRC) will be removed from the list of designated places of refuge under the Protection of Children and Juveniles Ordinance, a spokesman for the Health, Welfare and Food said today (January 28).

CYCRC, previously run by the Social Welfare Department, was one of the five designated places of refuge, providing temporary residential care for children in need of care or protection under the ordinance.

"As the occupancy rates of CYCRC have been less than satisfactory, the department considered that its services should be hived off to the non-governmental sector after a critical review of the cost-effectiveness of the centre," the spokesman said.

"CYCRC has subsequently been closed and Po Leung Kuk, another designated place of refuge, has taken over its role."

With the closure of CYCRC, the Protection of Children and Juveniles (Places of Refuge) (Amendment) Order 2004 will be made to give legislative effect to the removal of the centre from the list of designated places of refuge. The amendment order will be published in the Government Gazette on Friday (January 30) and tabled at the Legislative Council on February 4.
